Here stands a mosque that dared to be different the \u015eakirin Mosque. This isn’t just another Istanbul mosque. The \u015eakirin Mosque is a modern reinterpretation of Islamic architecture. It stands humbly at the entrance of the Karacaahmet Cemetery in \u00dcsk\u00fcdar.
Completed in 2009 the \u015eakirin Mosque broke ground. It was commissioned by the Semiha \u015eakir Foundation. The mosque honors \u0130brahim \u015eakir and Semiha \u015eakir.
Now, look closer at the exterior. Notice its simple form. Dark grey Kayseri stone dominates. The dome is covered in aluminum composite panels. These panels create a “shell dome” effect. At night blue lights transform the dome.
But the real surprise awaits inside the \u015eakirin Mosque. Zeynep Fad\u0131ll\u0131o\u011flu designed the interior. She is the first woman to design a mosque in modern Turkey.
Step inside and behold the turquoise and yellow altar. It welcomes you with striking beauty. The pulpit is acrylic. Tayfun Erdo\u011fmu\u015f designed it to represent the cosmos.
Above you hangs a grand chandelier. Nahide B\u00fcy\u00fckkaymak\u00e7\u0131 created its waterdrop-shaped glass globes. They symbolize Allah’s light falling like rain on worshipers. Look for God’s 99 names decorating the chandelier rings.
Notice how light fills the \u015eakirin Mosque. Windows replace walls on three sides. This contrasts traditional mosque designs. The panes stylize pages from the Quran.
Consider the dome’s design by Semih \u0130rte\u015f. It draws inspiration from Topkap\u0131 Palace’s Tophane pattern. Calligrapher H\u00fcseyin Kutlu inscribed Fat\u0131r S\u00fbre and M\u00fclk S\u00fbre around the dome’s center. All calligraphy uses 23-carat gold foil.
The women’s section allows a clear chandelier view. Seljuk motifs decorate this area. The barriers resemble delicate lace. This creates a play of light and shadow.
The \u015eakirin Mosque also has modern conveniences. There is indoor and outdoor parking. The mosque covers 10000 square meters. It can hold 500 people.
