“Axolotl Museum and Amphibian Conservation Center” is quite a mouthful isn’t it. Fortunately we can simply call it Anfibium. Anfibium is a vital part of the Chapultepec Zoo. It is key to preserving axolotls.
Anfibium opened on February 1, 2023. This was on Mexican National Axolotl Day. Nearly all amphibians are endangered. Many species are at risk of extinction. Anfibium is part of Mexico City’s conservation strategy. They aim to protect these animals.
The Anfibium building once housed elephants. Now, it supports education, research, and conservation. The star resident is the axolotl. This species is only found in the Valley of Mexico. At opening, Anfibium housed about 100 axolotls. These were at different stages of development. Four of Mexico’s 17 axolotl species are represented here.
Visitors get an introduction to the axolotl environment. You will see trees like tule and giant ahuehuetes. The center includes exhibition halls. There are workshops for kids. Four laboratories study and reproduce axolotls. A wetland recreates Xochimilco Lake.
Axolotls are indicator species. Their health reflects their environment’s quality. Their ability to thrive is a key indicator. If axolotls are healthy, it reflects well on the environment.
Visiting Anfibium is free. It is included with your Chapultepec Zoo admission. Anfibium is open daily. Visiting hours are from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Anfibium is more than just a museum. It is a center for learning. It is a place for conservation. The Anfibium plays a crucial role. It helps protect Mexico’s unique amphibians.
Anfibium’s mission extends beyond its walls. It aims to raise awareness. It promotes the importance of these creatures. Especially kids can learn a lot about the axolotl in the workshops. The study is also an important part of the Anfibium. The museum is actively involved in research.
The Anfibium’s location inside the Chapultepec Zoo makes it easily accessible. It is a short walk from other attractions in the park. The building itself, once home to elephants, has been transformed. It now provides a suitable environment for axolotls. It offers visitors a chance to see these amazing animals up close.
So, Anfibium is a great place for all who want to learn more about the axolotl.
