The story of VCD Athletic starts in 1916 during the First World War. This football club was born out of the Vickers armaments factory in Crayford. The workers at the factory formed a team, initially called Vickers (Erith) FC. The club, also fondly called “The Vickers”, started playing in the original Kent League after the war. They even had the advantage of recruiting Arsenal players who were finishing their war service at the factory at that time. For over 70 years, they played in the Kent Amateur League, winning the championship in 1953 and 1964. But in 1997, VCD Athletic achieved a significant milestone: they won the Kent County Premier Division title for the first time, claiming the championship by a record margin of 15 points.
They applied for and received senior status. The club continued to grow, securing promotion to the Isthmian League in 2009. But due to ground issues, they were demoted back to the Kent League just a year later. They managed to return to the Isthmian League in 2013, winning Division One North in the following season. VCD Athletic went on to play in the Isthmian League Premier Division, their highest level in the pyramid which is the system that determines the order of English football leagues.
Today, they are playing in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, with home games played at Oakwood Sports Ground in Crayford. VCD Athletic may not be a household name, but this club, built on the foundations of a World War I factory team, has a rich history and a loyal following in the community. This is a club that represents the spirit and resilience of the people of Crayford.
