Hidden in the tranquil valley of the Ysieux lies Bellefontaine. A charming village it sits about 30 kilometers north of Paris. Bellefontaine’s name a beautiful sound itself meaning beautiful fountain in Latin. This perfectly reflects the village’s serene landscape. The Ysieux a small stream flows through the heart of Bellefontaine. It’s fed by numerous springs and rivulets creating a network of wetlands. These wetlands were once used for watercress cultivation.

Bellefontaine’s history stretches back to the Neolithic era. Seven Neolithic sites have been discovered within its boundaries. Ancient megaliths and flint tools hint at a rich past. In the Middle Ages Bellefontaine was part of the Luzarches castellany. Later it became a fiefdom owned by prominent figures. The Molé family held it in the 18th century.

A fascinating piece of Bellefontaine’s history is the Boissonnet hospital fief. This land belonged to the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. In 1735 it belonged to André de Pommereu a counselor to the King’s parliament. The fief comprised about twenty acres. The Commander of Puiseux held high medium and low justice over it.

Bellefontaine boasts several noteworthy landmarks. The Church of Saint-Nicolas stands tall. Its unadorned facade features round-arched windows and buttresses. The church dates back to the 12th century undergoing renovations in the 16th century. It houses a beautiful stained-glass window above the Virgin Mary’s altar. This window depicting the Tree of Jesse was consecrated in 1524.

The Château de Bellefontaine sits in a vast park south of the RD 922. This classical-style chateau is now part of a retirement home. It’s a surviving section of a larger 17th-century building. The original chateau was rebuilt for Barnabé Maynard a counselor and master of the King’s household. The current building underwent restoration and remodeling in 1840. The original stables remain. They are architecturally similar to the château.

Nearby is the château’s dovecote. Its lower section dates to the second half of the 16th century. Its position away from the château’s old farm is unusual for this area. It was once connected to the now-vanished courtroom. The dovecote’s size was directly linked to the lord’s landholdings.

Bellefontaine’s history isn’t just in its grand structures. The village’s old washhouse is a testament to simpler times. A stone basin is sheltered by a gabled roof. It’s fed by a spring whose water was once used by the villagers. A nearby boundary stone from 1850 stands as a reminder of land disputes. A menhir known as the Long Stone adds another layer to Bellefontaine’s rich heritage. It dates back to the Neolithic period.

So as you stand here in Bellefontaine you are not just standing in a village. You are standing on layers of history a journey through time. From Neolithic settlements to medieval fiefdoms to its modern day Bellefontaine carries the echoes of centuries. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. It is a place you will not soon forget.
