Ever wonder what secrets lie within those grand walls? That’s the Bank Indonesia Museum. It stands as a testament to Indonesia’s rich financial history.

The Bank Indonesia Museum wasn’t always a museum. Once it was the headquarters of De Javasche Bank. This was the central bank of the Dutch East Indies.

De Javasche Bank was established in 1828. It issued Netherlands Indies Guldens. The building sits on land with a history all its own. It was once the site of Batavia’s Inner Hospital.

In the early 20th century, the old hospital was torn down. A new building was designed by Eduard Cuypers. He included Indonesian elements in his design. The front of the building was completed in 1909. It combines Neo-Renaissance style with Javanese ornaments.

During the Japanese occupation in 1942, the bank continued to operate. The first Rupiah note was printed here in 1944. This was an effort to nationalize Indonesia’s identity.

In 1953, the bank was nationalized as Bank Indonesia. A new headquarters was built in 1962. The old building was left to deteriorate.

In 2006, the building was restored. On July 21, 2009, it was opened as the Bank Indonesia Museum.

Inside the Bank Indonesia Museum, you’ll find a wealth of information. It covers Bank Indonesia’s role in Indonesian history. Monetary policies and payment systems are explained.

The museum uses audio and visuals. They showcase the history of currencies and trade in Indonesia. The story begins in the pre-colonial era. It continues through the spice trade, the Dutch East India Company, and the Japanese occupation. It concludes with the economic crisis of 1997.

The Bank Indonesia Museum displays old currencies from around the world. Some date back to the 14th century. You can also see printing machines. These machines were used to print the first Indonesian Rupiah.

There’s even a money shredder on display. This machine destroyed banknotes that were no longer fit for circulation. It cut them into star shapes. This showed the money was worthless. The machine could perforate 100 bills at once.

Don’t miss the stacks of gold bullion replicas. These represent Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves. Each gold bar weighs 13.5 kg.

Dioramas depict various banking activities. They also show scenes from the Indonesian revolution.

A miniature of a Javanese ship called Jung Java is on display. This was the largest Indonesian fleet in the 8th century. The Bank Indonesia Museum also has blueprints of De Javasche Bank. These blueprints show the development of the bank.

As you explore the Bank Indonesia Museum, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The interiors evoke the Dutch colonial era. Stained glass windows catch your eye.

The Bank Indonesia Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Indonesia’s financial past. It’s a place where history comes alive. You can learn about the events that shaped the nation’s economy. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in Indonesian history and culture. So, come and explore the million histories within Bank Indonesia Museum.
