A colossal structure of steel and glass pierces the sky. This is Torre Forestal Cola de Caballo. Its imposing height dominates the Paseo de la Reforma. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience.

The Torre Forestal Cola de Caballo wasn’t always this imposing skyscraper. Its history began with an even more ambitious dream. In 1976 plans were unveiled for a 220-meter hotel. It would have been the most exclusive hotel in Latin America. The Holiday Inn chain was to be the operator. Political and economic instability however stalled construction.

Work resumed in 1984. The concrete core exceeded 40 meters. Then disaster struck. The devastating 1985 earthquakes damaged the main crane and some concrete. The ambitious hotel project was scrapped. Two years later though construction resumed. This time it would be the Torre Forestal Cola de Caballo we see today.

The 135-meter tower has 34 floors. It was completed in 1988. Its dark glass facade was added later in the 1990s. It quickly became the tallest building on Paseo de la Reforma. It remains a significant structure in Mexico City.

The building’s seismic engineering is remarkable. The tower is isolated from the ground using 185 concrete piles. These piles penetrate 60 meters into the earth. They go below the former lake bed of Texcoco. This design protects against even major earthquakes. The tower withstood the 8.2 magnitude earthquake of 2017. It’s considered among the safest skyscrapers globally.

The building boasts 13 high-speed elevators. They move at 6.3 meters per second. It’s a smart building. A Building Management System controls utilities and safety systems. Even the lighting is managed intelligently. This advanced system monitors everything. It helps protect the lives of those working inside.

Beneath the ground are six levels of parking. The tower’s sophisticated HVAC system ensures fresh air. Automatic air injection and renewal systems constantly filter the air. They reduce pollutants from vehicle exhaust in the parking garage. The Torre Forestal Cola de Caballo is a modern marvel. It’s a true symbol of Mexico City’s resilience and technological progress. It stands proudly as a testament to engineering innovation.
