“Ready to step into a realm where science and progress converge?” Here at the Elphinstone Research Centre, groundbreaking research shapes the future of medicine. The Elphinstone Research Centre stands as a testament to innovation in East Lothian.

Once known as Inveresk Research International in the 1970s, Elphinstone Research Centre has a rich history. Inveresk was founded in 1957. It occupied the former offices of the Institute of Seaweed Research. Imagine scientists of yesteryear laying the foundation for today’s advancements.

Today, the Elphinstone Research Centre is part of Charles River Laboratories. It sits south of Tranent, nestled between the B6414 and B6371. This location is a hub of activity. Around 1,300 people are employed at the Elphinstone site.

East Lothian’s second-biggest employer continues to grow. Plans to expand research and development buildings at the Elphinstone operation were approved. This expansion created over 200 new jobs. These positions require fully qualified staff. This equates to a 17 percent rise in its local workforce.

The Elphinstone Research Centre increases capacity for all its work. This includes safety and efficacy testing of vaccines. Even COVID-19 vaccines benefit from this important work. Geoff Burns, general manager, stated that they were looking forward to opening new facilities. These opened in the autumn of 2022.

Charles River Laboratories is committed to attracting the best talent. The investment in facilities helps them stand out. They aim to be the best place to develop a career in life sciences. Paying a real living wage shows employees that they are valued. This is an exciting time to be at the Elphinstone Research Centre.

The Elphinstone Research Centre has been operating on this site for over 30 years. Life sciences are hugely important to Scotland’s economy. More than 37,000 people work in this sector across 700 organizations. A significant portion of the workforce lives in the county.

Approving the expansion plans added workspace. Labs, offices, and staff facilities were included at the Elphinstone Research Centre. Additional car parking spaces were also created.

As we conclude our visit to the Elphinstone Research Centre, consider its lasting impact. From its origins as Inveresk to its current role, it has shaped medical research. The Elphinstone Research Centre remains a vital asset to Scotland.
