Cemitério dos Prazeres was founded in 1833. This followed a severe cholera outbreak in Lisbon. The cemetery was originally called Cemitério Ocidental de Lisboa meaning Western Cemetery of Lisbon. It became a final resting place exclusively made up of mausoleums.
As you walk through Cemitério dos Prazeres notice the grand mausoleums. They are like small houses for the dead. Many prominent Portuguese figures are buried here. Prime Ministers Presidents and famous artists rest in peace here.
Look for the Mausoleum of the Dukes of Palmela. It is the largest mausoleum in Europe. It holds the remains of over 200 family members. This impressive structure shows the power and wealth of the Palmela family.
Many famous people were once buried at Cemitério dos Prazeres. Amália Rodrigues the Queen of Fado was one of them. Author Fernando Pessoa was also buried here. However both were later moved to the National Pantheon. Novelist Aquilino Ribeiro also rested here before his reinterment at the National Pantheon.
