In 1932, a beacon of hope arose in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood. This beacon was the Saint Mark Pentecostal Church of Holiness. Originally built for a Czech Catholic community, it later became a cornerstone for the Black community. The Saint Mark Pentecostal Church of Holiness stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. Initially known as Our Lady of Lourdes, the church served the Czech residents who migrated from Pilsen. The original wooden structure couldn’t contain the growing congregation. So, in 1932, the current Romanesque Revival-style building was erected. During the 1950s, North Lawndale transitioned into a predominantly Black community due to discriminatory housing policies. Despite these challenges, the Saint Mark Pentecostal Church of Holiness remained a vital community hub. Pastor Chaun Johnson recognized the church’s historical significance. He began pursuing landmark status for the Saint Mark Pentecostal Church of Holiness in 2019. This effort culminated in the church being designated a Chicago landmark in 2021. This designation not only protects the building but also opens doors to tax and financial incentives. Pastor Johnson’s vision was clear. He wanted to preserve the church’s history. He also wanted to demonstrate the community’s investment in the neighborhood. He aimed to showcase the “lily in the valley,” a symbol of beauty amidst challenging circumstances. The Saint Mark Pentecostal Church of Holiness is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of perseverance and community spirit in North Lawndale.
