Standing here, what do you see? St Peter’s Church. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith and community. This church has evolved over decades. It reflects the changing face of Clapham.

St Peter’s Church began humbly. In 1877, Revd Fitzwilliam Bowyer donated land. He was the Rector of Clapham. He also was Lord of the Manor. The land was between Clapham Manor Street and Little Manor Street. Today, Little Manor Street is Prescott Place.

A year later, a small brick building stood here. It had a corrugated iron roof. This was the original St Peter’s. It comprised only the three western bays of the Nave. It reached the base of the Clerestory. People generously responded to the Rector’s appeal.

In 1879, St Peter’s was dedicated for worship. The Bishop of Rochester, Bishop Thorold, officiated. Clapham was then part of the Diocese of Rochester. By 1880, a fourth bay was added. This bay featured a raised platform. It served as the Choir and Sanctuary. This initial phase cost about £2,500.

Look at the church now. Notice the chancel extension. See the upper clerestory. These additions transformed St Peter’s by 1902. The cottages on Clapham Manor Street were replaced. The entrance shifted to Prescott Place.

By 1904, the Lady Chapel was complete. It sits adjacent to the chancel. An organ loft was added. It housed a fine 3-manual Hunter organ. Vestry and sacristy spaces were also created. JEK Cutts designed these expansions.

Inside St Peter’s, the reredos is striking. It towers above the high altar. It serves as a 1914-18 war memorial. Kempe completed it by Easter 1919. The central panel depicts the risen Lord. Roman soldiers are beneath him. The other panels display saints and doctors of the church.

Most internal fixtures were finished by the 1920s. The wrought iron chancel screen is notable. Gates lead to a carved wooden Rood. Hitch carved the attendant figures. A Bavarian artist from the Austrian Tyrol created the 14 Stations of the Cross. Reginald Halward designed stained glass windows. They represent the Beatitudes.

The choir vestry is part of a larger hall complex. This complex was completed in 1907. Bomb damage occurred in 1944. Repairs included refurbished halls. These reopened in 1953.

Consider the church’s accessibility today. The sound system has a hearing aid loop. A portable ramp is available. It assists wheelchair users at the main door.

The Pulpit was installed in 1913. It replaced a previous one. That pulpit went to the Church of the Holy Spirit. It is on Narbonne Avenue in Clapham.

St Peter’s continues to evolve. It stands as a beacon of faith. It is a place for all. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Think about its role in the community. Notice the details. They tell a story of dedication. They speak of transformation. St Peter’s is not just a building. It is a living testament to faith.
