The last Anglo-Saxon king of England, Edward the Confessor, rests beneath the stones of Westminster Abbey. It is here, amidst the grandeur of the Norman abbey, that Edward’s legacy endures. His story begins with a life of exile in Normandy, escaping the Viking raids that plagued his kingdom in the early 11th century. But Edward’s exile nurtured a deep faith. Following his return to England and coronation in Winchester in 1043, Edward vowed to rebuild a monastery dedicated to St Peter.
Edward’s dedication to his Christian faith, alongside his benevolent rule and the end of burdensome taxes, earned him the epithet “the Confessor.” This moniker highlights his reputation for piety and his enduring influence on the English people. The building of Westminster Abbey, completed before his death in 1066, became a testament to his unwavering faith.
His reign, however, was marked by internal political strife. Edward faced a tumultuous power struggle with the powerful Earl Godwin and his family, who eventually pushed him to the brink of defeat. The Godwins’ influence grew to a point where they nearly usurped Edward’s authority. Edward is remembered as a compassionate king, but also a strategic one. When he returned to England after years in exile he saw his mother Emma, who had married Cnut the Great, as a rival for the throne. Emma’s alliance with Cnut had taken the throne from Edward’s father, Ethelred the Unready. This power struggle within the family explains why Emma was held away from Edward’s court for much of his reign.
