Qiandeng, also known as “Thousands Lights,” earned its name for its vibrant and colorful lanterns that illuminate the town. But Qiandeng is more than just a pretty face. It is the birthplace of Kunqu Opera and the hometown of the patriotic poet Gu Yanwu.
Imagine walking along the 3,000-meter-long stone Slate Street. It was built in the Southern Song Dynasty. Feel the history beneath your feet. This street is composed of 2,072 pieces of stone. It stands as the best-preserved and longest of its kind in Jiangsu Province.
Notice the architecture around you. Many buildings retain their Ming and Qing Dynasty styles. They showcase both Suzhou and Huizhou influences. Admire these styles on Zhongshi Street, Qinpan Street, and Nanshi Street.
Let’s visit the Former Residence of Gu Yanwu. Gu Yanwu famously said, “Everyone should be responsible for the rise and fall of his country.” His words resonate even today.
Not far away stands the Qinfeng Tower. It is 38.7-meter tall. It was built in 503 during the Liang Dynasty. Locals also call it Beauty Tower. This is due to its slender silhouette. Inside the nearby Jade Buddha Hall, you can find a reclining jade Buddha adorned with over 1,500 precious stones.
Interestingly, Qiandeng was once called Qiandun, meaning “one thousand pier.” This was during the Ming dynasty. The name officially changed to Qiandeng in 2003.
Did you know that Qiandeng is closely linked to a romantic legend? The Qixi Festival, China’s Valentine’s Day, tells the story of the Weaver Girl and the Cowherd. Ancient people saw two bright stars separated by the Milky Way. This inspired the tale of separated lovers who could only meet once a year.
