Did you ever hear of a place named after a garden? Vauxhall, here on Auckland’s North Shore, carries a piece of London’s history. Vauxhall takes its name from the famous Vauxhall Gardens in London. Southeastern Narrow Neck is where you’ll find Vauxhall. It got its name in the 1870s thanks to William Cobley. He was a pioneer settler who established his own Vauxhall Gardens here, a nod to his homeland. Some gardeners from the original London Vauxhall Gardens were even brought to New Zealand. They helped to shape this area. Imagine strolling through Cobley’s gardens, perhaps enjoying a picnic much like Londoners did in the original Vauxhall Gardens. Vauxhall isn’t just about gardens though. This area was once a racecourse for the Takapuna Jockey Club. Later, it became home to the Waitamata golf club. It’s also a suburb where people live their lives, attend Vauxhall School, and go about their daily routines. Vauxhall School has been a part of this community for over a century. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020. Vauxhall is a blend of history, recreation, and suburban life. It’s a reminder that even across vast oceans, connections can bloom in the most unexpected places.
