Listen closely. The rush of Minnehaha Creek whispers secrets. It sings a song of centuries. A song of Native cultures. A song of early explorers. A song of a city’s growth.

Minnehaha Creek a 22-mile tributary of the Mississippi River flows from Lake Minnetonka. Its waters carve a path through Minneapolis and beyond. The creek’s name meaning waterfall in Dakota reflects its most famous feature Minnehaha Falls. This powerful cascade is a centerpiece of Minnehaha Park.

Long before European settlers arrived the Mdewakanton Dakota people lived near Minnehaha Creek. They valued the falls a place of gathering. Joe Brown and Will Snelling were among the first documented Euro-Americans to explore the creek. They canoed upstream from Fort Snelling. This was in the early 1800s.

Minnehaha Creek wasn’t initially seen as hugely important. Lieutenant Zebulon Pike focused on the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers confluence. He bought land that included the falls but didn’t find the creek’s source Lake Minnetonka.

The creek’s significance soared thanks to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. His famous poem The Song of Hiawatha made Minnehaha Falls world-renowned. This was despite Longfellow never visiting the falls himself. The poem forever linked the falls with romance and legend.

The creek’s water flow proved too unreliable for industrial purposes. A gristmill built below the falls in the 1850s failed to thrive. Yet the falls became a significant attraction.

In 1889 Minneapolis purchased 173 acres around Minnehaha Falls creating Minnehaha Park. The park has many features. These include a replica of Longfellow’s home and a statue of Hiawatha and Minnehaha.

Today Minnehaha Creek remains a vital part of Minneapolis. It is a beautiful place for walking. It offers breathtaking views. Minnehaha Creek provides a rich tapestry of history culture and natural beauty. It continues to inspire and captivate all who visit.
