Nestled in the heart of Üsküdar, Karadavud Paşa Camii stands as a testament to time and change. It’s often called Kara Davud Paşa Camii. This mosque, commissioned by Davud Paşa during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II, has a unique story to tell. Karadavud Paşa Camii’s journey through history has been marked by fire and restoration, but its essence has survived. The mosque has seen several renovations, notably in 1817-18 by Hüseyin Ağa and again shortly after by another benefactor also named Hüseyin Ağa. Later, in 1867-68, Hacı Aziz Ağa led another restoration after a fire. Karadavud Paşa Camii also underwent extensive renovations in the mid-20th century. The original wooden roof and ceiling were replaced with a dome, significantly altering its appearance. This transformation highlights the mosque’s adaptability and resilience in the face of changing times. Karadavud Paşa Camii was initially designed with a central square space and smaller domed sections flanking it. These side sections may have been intended as tabhane rooms. This distinctive layout offers a glimpse into the architectural intentions and perhaps even the social dynamics of its time. Despite the changes, Karadavud Paşa Camii retains its intriguing layout. The mosque’s interior is divided into three sections. The central area, covered by the newly constructed dome, contrasts with the lower, domed side sections. Originally, these areas were likely separated by screen walls with windows. This unique design element sets Karadavud Paşa Camii apart from other mosques of the period. The mosque’s history also intertwines with other historical figures. A primary school, a waqf of Şehid Ali Paşa, once stood within the mosque’s courtyard. The courtyard also held the tomb of Alemdar Ahmed Baba, who passed away in 1680. These details add layers to the rich tapestry of stories woven within the walls of Karadavud Paşa Camii. Although Karadavud Paşa Camii may not be as famous as some other Ottoman mosques, it holds a significant place in Turkish architectural history. Its unusual transverse layout and the evolution of its design offer a unique window into the complexities of Ottoman architectural and religious practices. Standing here, before this unique edifice, we can appreciate the enduring spirit of a mosque that has witnessed centuries of Istanbul’s history unfold.
