A legacy of athleticism and artistry. That’s the Beaurepaire Centre. Right here before us stands a testament to Melbourne’s sporting heritage. This isn’t just a gym or a pool. The Beaurepaire Centre is a story waiting to be unveiled.

Built in 1957 it was a bold vision. Leading up to the 1956 Melbourne Olympics a modern sporting venue was needed. Sir Frank Beaurepaire a successful businessman politician and Olympic swimmer himself made it happen. His generous bequest funded this architectural marvel.

Eggleston MacDonald & Secomb designed the Beaurepaire Centre. They were early adopters of modernism in Melbourne. The architects collaborated with engineer Bill Irwin. He also worked on the Melbourne Olympic Swimming Pool and the Myer Music Bowl. The design is striking a series of free-span bays over a 25-meter pool. Full-height glazed walls once included sliding doors. These created a connection between the pool and the campus.

But the Beaurepaire Centre is more than just structure. It’s a canvas for art. Leonard French a renowned Australian artist created a mural in the gymnasium. A stunning abstract tiled frieze adorns the exterior. The interior mural “Symmetry of Sport” is enormous. It stretches from floor to ceiling. Parts of it are visible from outside the building. Even from the pool itself you can see sections of the masterpiece. In 1958 a copy of a bronze Zeus statue was donated. It now stands at the top of the stairs to the trophy hall.

The Beaurepaire Centre is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where history and sport intertwine. It was opened in late 1956 just months after Sir Frank Beaurepaire’s death. It served as a training site for the Olympics. This building is a fitting tribute to his legacy. It’s a place where champions trained. A place where athletic dreams were forged. The Beaurepaire Centre continues to serve its purpose. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. A place where the spirit of competition and excellence endures. This remarkable building is a cherished part of the University of Melbourne campus. It remains remarkably intact and in active use. It stands as a powerful symbol of Melbourne’s past and present. A legacy of athleticism art and generosity. A true treasure.
