The Avenue Vergniaud was built around 1895. This avenue is a reminder of Pierre Victurnien Vergniaud, a lawyer who became an eloquent spokesperson for the Girondin faction during the French Revolution. His efforts were to ensure that the French Revolution would be a peaceful one. Imagine Vergniaud as a lawyer pleading the case of a soldier who was involved in a riot against a landlord, which got him widespread attention. He was elected to the administration of the Gironde d’partement in 1790, and he welcomed the abolishment of France’s feudal institutions. The Girondins wanted a constitutional monarchy, which was also supported by Vergniaud initially. Vergniaud’s political views shifted over time as a result of the ongoing events in the French Revolution. He eventually became president of the National Convention and was a vocal advocate for war against Austria. He fiercely defended his beliefs but was eventually imprisoned and guillotined in 1793. The avenue in Paris was named in honor of him, a reminder of his great passion for peace and his contributions to the French Revolution.
