“Solidity and wealth.” That’s what the New Zealand Insurance Company wanted to project when it built The Guardhouse. This category-one heritage building stands as Auckland’s earliest remaining high-rise block.

Before you stands The Guardhouse. Today it is cherished. But in 1918, this spot marked Auckland’s original shoreline. The Waihorotiu valley met the Waitematā Harbour right here, before land reclamation changed the landscape forever.

The Guardhouse replaced a smaller building from the 1870s. The New Zealand Insurance Company needed something grander. Hoggard, Gummer and Prouse, a noted architecture firm, designed the eight-story skyscraper. It even reflected the stripped classical style. This design simplified post-WWI classical elements.

Notice the entrance portico. Corinthian columns adorn it. They were designed to portray solidity and wealth. The NZI Company wanted to impress its clients. The Guardhouse became Auckland’s tallest skyscraper.

Inside The Guardhouse, the Auckland Stock Exchange bustled. Banking halls echoed with activity. Exchange Lane, just adjacent, still reminds us of that era. The Queen Street facade displays Nelson Kairuru marble. Step inside if you can. The terrazzo floor and grand marble and oak staircase remain. These are original features from 1918.

For many years, The Guardhouse served as offices for The Guardian Trust, after the New Zealand Insurance Company era. In 1982, it officially became The Guardian Trust after a merger.

In 2003, The Guardhouse was repurposed into residential apartments. Today, it is a mixed-use community. Studios, penthouses and everything in between fill this historic building. Residents share a love for their unique home. Retailers add to the vibrant scene. The Guardhouse is home to a diverse residential group of owners and renters.

The Guardian stands as a solid example of Stripped Classical design. It was inspired by commercial buildings in the United States, especially Chicago. This style adapted 19th-century architecture to 20th-century needs.

Heritage buildings connect us to the past. They tell stories of builders, communities, and bygone eras. The Guardhouse is a tangible link to Auckland’s history. It is a source of pride for residents and visitors alike. The Guardian is also part of a wider city neighborhood of older buildings of all ages and styles. It contributes to a re-awakening and acknowledgement of this built heritage.
