Eleven thousand square feet of knowledge. That’s what the Aina Haina Public Library offers. It opened its doors in 1962. A modest 8000 books filled its shelves then. Today over 58000 items are available. Books periodicals and audiovisual materials are all housed within.

The Aina Haina Public Library wasn’t just built. It was a community effort. The Hind Estate generously provided the land. Architect Edward Aotani designed the building. Contractor D K Nagata brought it to life. The cost a mere $171190. A far cry from today’s construction prices.

This wasn’t the first library in East Honolulu. Waikiki Library predated it. Yet the Aina Haina Public Library held a special place. It served families from Waialae to Koko Head. For many years it was the only library serving that vast area. Kaimuki and Hawaii Kai libraries eventually eased the load.

The Aina Haina Public Library is more than just books. It’s a community hub. Programs for all ages are held regularly. A local Friends group ensures its continued success. The Friends organize popular book sales. In 2008 the library added a senior services librarian. It was only the second library in the state to offer such a service. The library reflects the community’s diversity.

The library keeps evolving. In 2011 it became the first public library on Oahu to install solar panels. This provided seventy percent of its electricity. Flooding in 2018 led to renovations. New flooring was installed. The interior and exterior received fresh coats of paint. In 2019 restrooms were renovated to meet ADA standards.

The Aina Haina Public Library isn’t simply a place to borrow books. It is a testament to community spirit. It’s a symbol of progress and adaptation. It’s a vibrant center of knowledge and community engagement. So take a moment to appreciate this vital part of Honolulu’s history. Explore its shelves and discover its many stories.
