After Grant’s death in 1885, Chicagoans wanted to honor him. Potter Palmer and Joseph Stockton led the charge. They quickly raised funds for a memorial. Louis Rebisso was chosen to design the statue. William Le Baron Jenney suggested the granite pedestal.
