How many neighborhoods can boast a name derived from a luxurious mansion? That’s La Lucila’s unique claim to fame. Today we will delve into the story behind this charming Buenos Aires neighborhood.

La Lucila began as part of Punta de los Olivos. It was a strategic military battery during the first English invasion. Fast forward to the early 20th century. Aristocratic families from Buenos Aires sought refuge here. They wanted a place to rest away from the city. Large subdivisions and land auctions marked this period.

Lieutenant Colonel Alfredo F. de Urquiza spearheaded the change. He built a grand mansion. He named it “La Lucila” in 1915. It was a tribute to his wife, Lucila Marcelina Anchorena de Urquiza. Sadly, she passed away two years later. The mansion’s fame grew quickly. Soon everyone called the area La Lucila.

The 1920s saw more families settling here. Subdivisions became more common. A key moment arrived in 1933. Alfredo F. de Urquiza donated land for a train station. This connected La Lucila even more.

The economic crisis of the 1930s hit hard. Maintaining the La Lucila mansion became too expensive. The family couldn’t agree on how to keep it up. In 1939, they decided to demolish it. By 1943, the land was auctioned off. Only the lookout survived. It stands as the oldest corner of La Lucila.

Community spirit flourished. In 1934, the La Lucila Improvement Society was founded. They found a permanent home in 1943. It wasn’t until 1980 that La Lucila officially became a recognized neighborhood.

Cablevisión was founded here in 1981. The Ecological Reserve opened in 2000. It sits where Avenida Paraná meets the Río de la Plata. This reserve protects native flora and fauna.

Today La Lucila offers a relaxed atmosphere. Its streets are lined with trees. Beautiful houses dot the landscape. Expats find it peaceful and safe.

La Lucila’s population was around 20,000 in early 2025. The weather is generally mild. Temperatures range from the mid-50s to the mid-70s Fahrenheit. The cost of living for an expat averages around $1,500 USD per month. A one-bedroom apartment rents for about $500 USD per month. A two-bedroom costs around $700 USD.

Finding a place to live involves online searches and local real estate agents. Expats often find modern, spacious homes. Balconies and terraces offer stunning views. Amenities like swimming pools and gyms are common.

Meeting people is easy. Join clubs, take classes, or visit local parks. Cafés and restaurants are also great spots. Local events like farmers markets create community.

Life in La Lucila is pleasant. It’s a great place to live and work. The cost of living is relatively low. Cafés, restaurants, and bars are plentiful. It’s close to the beach for outdoor activities. Plus it’s well-connected to the rest of Argentina.

La Lucila is a neighborhood born from a mansion’s legacy. It evolved from a military outpost to an aristocratic haven. It overcame economic challenges and fostered community spirit. Today La Lucila stands as a testament to its rich history. It provides a tranquil retreat within the bustling Buenos Aires metropolis.
