Welcome to Sri Krishna Bahavan Alayam. We are at Taman Pekaka in Sungai Dua. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a symbol of community. It also marks resilience. Sri Krishna Bahavan Alayam has adapted to the changing times.
In the early 20th century Sri Krishna Bahavan Alayam was founded. Taman Pekaka did not exist yet. The temple began as Sri Ramar Madam-Math. It was within an Indian settlement. This area included Jalan Sungai Dua Besar and Lorong Sungai Dua. It also included Batu Uban. The temple honored the Hindu deity Krishna. It became a vital hub for the local Tamil community.
Around 1932, the government requested the temple to relocate. The original site was needed. It was to build the Minden Army Barrack. Now it is the USM Guard post. The government provided financial assistance and building materials. A generous Chinese landlord leased land for the temple’s construction.
Sri Krishna Bahavan Alayam was officially registered. It happened on July 30 1965. It was registered with the Registrar of Societies Penang. The temple adopted its current name. In 1966, an anonymous buyer purchased the land. It was then sold to SPPK in 1968. SPPK means Syarikat Koperasi Pegawai-Pegawai Kerajaan.
From 1986, the temple committee negotiated with SPPK. They wanted to buy the land and rebuild the temple. An agreement was reached. SPPK completed a new temple in August 1988. But it did not meet the growing needs of devotees.
In 1991, another agreement was made. This was to reconstruct the temple. After delays, the rebuilt Sri Krishna Bahavan Alayam was dedicated. The dedication happened on October 31 2004 at 10:10 am.
What makes Sri Krishna Bahavan Alayam unique? Its exterior features a single color. A riot of colors is only below the ceiling. This is apart from the standard beige. According to temple authorities, this simplifies upkeep. It also simplifies maintenance.
