“Bien heureux sont ceux, qui ouent la parole de Dieu et la gardent.” These words greet visitors in the Waldenserkirche. They translate to “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it”. This inscription survived the church’s destruction in World War II. It now stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

The Waldenserkirche is more than just a building. It represents a community’s enduring spirit. It stands in the Karlsruher Stadtteil Neureut. The church’s history is intertwined with religious refugees. In 1699 Markgraf Friedrich Magnus founded Welschneureut. He welcomed Huguenots fleeing persecution in southern France.

Initially, the community built a wooden prayer room. But, a storm destroyed it in 1707. In 1720, Zimmermeister Dold rebuilt it as a half-timbered structure. Johann Heinrich Arnold constructed the present church between 1749 and 1751. It featured a plastered building with sandstone frames.

The Neureut Hugenots arrived around the same time as the Waldensians. This led to the local church becoming known as the Waldenserkirche. The church faced destruction again during the Second World War. After the war the community rebuilt the exterior. They followed the Weinbrenner style. A bell tower was added to the gable side.

Today the Waldenserkirche is part of the Evangelical Church. Every Sunday at 1100, children gather in the Gemeindehaus. They celebrate Kindergottesdienst together. Every second Sunday of the month, another service takes place. It is held at the kindergarten on Flughafenstraße at 1100. Children sing songs and hear stories from the Bible. They also enjoy crafts, painting and games.

Once a year, there is a trip and a barbecue. Parents are welcome to attend. The children perform a Krippenspiel at Christmas. They practice diligently for this event. The Waldenserkirche community extends beyond services. They organize events for all ages. They host Hausführungen, Gottesdienste and Kirchenchorproben. The Glocken-Café offers a space for fellowship.

The Waldenserkirche in Neureut stands as a symbol. It embodies faith, community and perseverance. Its history is etched into its walls. It’s a welcoming beacon for all.
