“Poetry whispered in stone” might sound whimsical. Yet it truly embodies the essence of Allée Robert Desnos.

Welcome to Allée Robert Desnos a place dedicated to a remarkable French poet. Robert Desnos was not only a poet but also a significant figure in the French Resistance during World War II.

Allée Robert Desnos is located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. It is in the Hôpital Saint-Louis neighborhood. The allée intersects several streets. These include Rue Albert Camus, Rue Boy-Zelenski and Rue Georg Friedrich Haendel.

The area was redeveloped in the 1980s. This created a central public space. It became Place Robert Desnos. The place is named in honor of Robert Desnos. He was a French poet and resistance fighter. He died during deportation in World War II.

Robert Desnos was born in Paris in 1900. He became a key figure in the Surrealist movement. He was known for his exceptional verbal abilities. He also had enthusiasm for diverse experiments. Desnos could effortlessly practice automatic writing. In a sleep-like state he “spoke surrealism at will”. His words flowed inexhaustibly.

Desnos’s relationship with the Surrealists became strained. This was due to his journalistic activities. He also refused to submit to group discipline. In 1929 the Surrealists broke up.

In 1933 Desnos began a radio career. His imagination, humour and warm words created wonders. Desnos led a team responsible for advertising slogans. These slogans and programmes were broadcast by Parisian Post Office and Radio Luxembourg. He aimed to make his listeners dream. He also wanted them to be active in communication.

During World War II Desnos joined the Agir network. He passed on confidential information from the newspaper. He also made false papers for Jews and Resistance fighters.

Robert Desnos was arrested on February 22 1944. He was deported to several camps. He ultimately died of typhus in the Terezin camp in Czechoslovakia on June 8 1945.

Allée Robert Desnos is a place of memory. It is a tribute to a poet who fought for freedom. It also serves as a reminder of the power of words and the importance of resistance in the face of oppression. While here be sure to notice the Wallace fountain. It adds a touch of Parisian charm.

So as you stand here on Allée Robert Desnos remember the poet’s words. Remember his courage and remember his commitment to freedom. Allée Robert Desnos stands as a testament to his enduring legacy in the heart of Paris.
