Within these hallowed walls whispers of centuries past echo. This is the Patriarchal Church of Saint George in Istanbul. For centuries it has stood as the spiritual heart of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. A beacon of Orthodox faith in the vibrant city.

Originally a small chapel for an Orthodox convent. It underwent a transformation under Patriarch Matthew II. Between 1598 and 1601 he converted it into the home of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The nuns relocated. The Phanar became a center for monks and the heart of Orthodoxy. It’s even called The Great Monastery.

The current structure boasts a basilica design with three aisles. A testament to the beauty and simplicity valued by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. It has seen extensive reconstruction. Patriarch Timothy II significantly rebuilt and refurbished it around 1614. You can still see the inscription on the facade. Later Patriarchs also contributed to its restoration. Kallinikos II repaired walls and roof. Jeremiah III rebuilt it after a fire adding a dome. Gregory V added the altars and Gregory VI raised the roof to its present height.

A fire in 1720 caused significant damage. The church was completely rebuilt. Two major donors Constantinos Kapoukechagias and Athanasios Kiourtsibasis contributed to its rebuilding.

The iconostasis is a stunning blend of styles. It has Byzantine Renaissance Baroque and even Ottoman influences. Some of its icons date back to 1746. They depict Christ St George the Theotokos and St Nicholas. The icon of St Euphemia dates to 1741. The iconostasis is divided into three sections and three levels. Smaller icons are more accessible for personal devotion.

The church houses precious artifacts. A seventeenth-century candle stand stands out. Made of walnut and decorated with ivory petals. It’s a replica of early Egyptian craftsmanship. It was a gift from Manuel a furrier who was a great benefactor of education.

The patriarchal throne is another treasure. Legend attributes it to St John Chrysostom. Inscriptions reveal it was a gift in 1577. It’s four meters tall made of walnut inlaid with ivory and mother of pearl. It’s shaped like a vine. Precious stones once adorned it but are now gone.

The relics of St Euphemia are also significant. They were involved in a miracle during the Fourth Ecumenical Council in 451. The relics of St Theophano and St Solomone are also kept here. In 2004 the relics of St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom were returned. They had been taken to Rome during the Fourth Crusade. Their return was a significant symbol of reconciliation.

The church of St George is more than a building. It is a living testament to the resilience of faith. A place where history spirituality and art intertwine. It’s a vital part of Istanbul’s rich cultural heritage. A place where one can feel the presence of centuries of devotion. A place to visit appreciate and reflect.
