Before it became a quiet residential area Heidelberg West had a pivotal role in the 1956 Summer Olympics. The suburb was home to the athletes’ village. After the games ended the village was transformed. It became a Housing Commission of Victoria estate. In recent years many properties have been sold into private ownership. This shift reflects the ongoing changes in Heidelberg West.

These include Audrey Brooks Pre-School Olympic Village Primary School and Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE. It plays at Olympic Village Reserve. Heidelberg United Football Club also maintains its training facility in Heidelberg West. These clubs showcase the community spirit that defines the suburb.
