Established in 1979 Odyssey House School has a unique history. It wasn’t always a school. It began as a treatment program for addiction. Dr Fraser McDonald spearheaded this effort. Dame Barbara Goodman a former Auckland City councillor and mayoress became its first chair. The first facility Vanguard House opened in 1981. It was a humble beginning with just one employee.

Odyssey House’s reach expanded rapidly. In 1982 a facility opened in Parnell. Funding came entirely from donations. Then came Lantana Lodge. This was New Zealand’s first residential program for young people struggling with substance abuse. A Christchurch branch followed in 1985. By 1990 Odyssey purchased the Bollard Girls’ Home in New Windsor. This significantly expanded its services.

The 1990s saw further growth. A dual diagnosis program opened in 1995. This addressed co-occurring mental health and addiction issues. It was a pioneering program in New Zealand. A gambling addiction service started in 1996. Youth residential services were modified in 1997 to improve retention.

Odyssey continued to innovate. In 2001 the Goodman Centre opened. This provided support for youth with more complex needs. The Odyssey House School itself opened in 2004. It’s located on the Bollard Avenue site a purpose-built family facility where caregivers could also receive treatment. The school is a vital part of Odyssey House’s holistic approach. It caters to students in years 9-15. The school’s approximately 26 students come from diverse backgrounds. About 9 are European. 15 are Maori. Two students are Pacific Islander.

Odyssey House School isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s a beacon of hope for young people facing challenges. It’s a place where education and healing intertwine. It’s a place where students learn about overcoming adversity and building a better future. The school stands as a symbol of hope and recovery. Its journey from a treatment program to a comprehensive school is a truly remarkable story. It is a testament to the dedication and vision of those who built it.
