Hidden amidst Lyon’s bustling heart lies Champvert a neighborhood steeped in history. Champvert’s story begins long ago with a Roman road. This ancient pathway known as the Ocean Road connected Lyon to the English Channel. It carved a path westward from Fourvière Hill following the route of present-day Avenue Barthélémy Buyer. Imagine Roman legions marching along this very road.

Champvert transformed over the centuries. From medieval forests and pastures to a haven for Lyon’s wealthy bourgeoisie. These elite families owned expansive estates surrounded by tall walls and towering trees. They called it “Little Provence” a testament to its tranquil beauty. One such estate was the Maison Magneval home to Gabriel-Barthélémy de Magneval a Lyon deputy. Sadly this grand residence was demolished in 1970. It made way for the Hautefeuilles park and residential area.

The mid-20th century brought significant change. The construction of a highway and an access ramp to Tassin and Ménival cut through the plateau. This caused demolitions and expropriations altering the landscape forever. New buildings replaced the old villas. The Résidence Champvert was one of the first large housing complexes. It marked the beginning of Champvert’s modern urban development.

Despite this transformation Champvert retains its green spaces. A pedestrian walkway lined with trees runs parallel to Avenue Barthélémy Buyer. It follows the route of an old railway line connecting Saint-Just station to Vaugneray. The Champvert park still boasts a luxurious Art Deco villa now home to the neighborhood library.

Today Champvert is a vibrant community. It houses the Massues medico-surgical and rehabilitation center specializing in spinal surgery. It also features the Champvert medical clinic dedicated to adult psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care. Explore its streets. Discover its hidden corners. Feel the past present and future intertwined in Champvert. The neighborhood’s story isn’t merely bricks and mortar. It’s the enduring spirit of Lyon itself.
