Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Lyon, discover the tranquil Square Général Marcel Descour. This square, nestled in the 6th arrondissement, holds a story as compelling as the city itself. Square Général Marcel Descour isn’t just a green space. It’s a tribute to a remarkable man who played a pivotal role in Lyon’s history. General Marcel Descour, born in Paris in 1899, became a key figure in the French Resistance during World War II. He arrived in Lyon in 1939, initially working at the military headquarters. As the war progressed, Descour’s courage and strategic thinking led him to become a prominent leader in the Resistance. He directed the Organisation de Résistance de l’Armée and later the Armée Secrète for the Lyon region. Descour, also known by his Resistance pseudonyms “Cavalier,” “Dautry,” “Périmètre,” and “Bayard,” worked tirelessly to unite Resistance forces. His leadership was instrumental in coordinating actions and ensuring communication between different groups. He even cautioned against the improvisations of guerrilla warfare in the Vercors Massif. Tragically, his son, Jacques, was killed in action in Vassieux during the German assault in July 1944. In a remarkable turn of events, Descour played a critical role in the liberation of Lyon. On August 20, 1944, he was entrusted with leading the liberation operations. His influence and respect among Resistance members, both civilian and military, were so profound that General de Lattre de Tassigny appointed him Military Governor of Lyon and the region. Square Général Marcel Descour stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication and service. His tenure as governor, marked by firmness, independence, and diplomacy, was crucial during the tumultuous post-liberation period. He initiated the concept of the “Armée-Nation” liaison, promoting collaboration between the army and the nation. Descour’s influence extended beyond wartime. After the war, he held various positions in the Ministry and served as commander of the French occupation forces in Austria. He even returned to Lyon in 1956 for a second term as Military Governor. In 1959, he achieved the prestigious rank of Army General before retiring to his family home in Montbrison-sur-Lez. Square Général Marcel Descour, once known as Square des Charmettes, was renamed in 2013 to honor this remarkable figure. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of history whispering through the leaves. The square, formerly the site of a bowling alley and later expanded through demolition, stands as a peaceful reminder of General Descour’s unwavering commitment to Lyon. It’s a place to reflect on the sacrifices made during the war and the resilience of a city reborn.
