Did you ever imagine a place named after windmills, yet renowned for iron and ships? Here in Millwall, that unlikely pairing is at the heart of its story. Millwall takes its name from the cluster of seven windmills that once stood proudly on the river wall. They ground corn and wheat brought up the Thames, a testament to the power of wind and tide. Millwall was once a quiet, rural peninsula known as Marshwall. The windmills marked its identity. But as the Industrial Revolution took hold, the wind gave way to steam, and the mills were replaced by the clang of ironworks and shipyards. One of these shipyards, Napier Yard, witnessed the birth of a giant, the SS Great Eastern, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Imagine the spectacle in 1858 as this enormous vessel, larger than any ship before it, was launched sideways into the Thames. Millwall became synonymous with industry and shipbuilding. This industrial boom attracted workers, leading to a surge in population. The windmills might be gone, but their legacy lives on in the name Millwall. The area’s football club, Millwall F.C., founded here in 1885 as Millwall Rovers, carries the name even though they moved south of the river in 1910. Millwall today is a blend of old and new. The echoes of its industrial past mingle with modern developments. The river wall, once lined with windmills, now offers a scenic walk along the Thames Path. This path leads you past remnants of the SS Great Eastern’s launch ramp, a reminder of Millwall’s grand shipbuilding era. Millwall invites you to discover its unique history, where the whispers of windmills and the roar of industry intertwine.
