Stand right here before the Broad Walk bandstand, and let me tell you a story. Imagine a bandstand in Richmond Park, surrounded by sprawling greenery. Back in the 1970s, this very bandstand was moved here, to its new home in Regent’s Park. This bandstand has seen much in its lifetime. Here in Regent’s Park, on July 20th, 1982, tragedy struck. An IRA terrorist attack targeted this very spot. The attack claimed the lives of seven bandsmen and left many more injured. It was a shocking event, a dark stain on a place that had always been meant for music and joy. Today, a small memorial plaque on the bandstand’s base commemorates the seven lost lives, a poignant reminder of the attack. But even in the face of tragedy, music continues to resonate here. If you look around, you’ll see veterans trees flanking the bandstand. It’s a beautiful spot, a perfect place for a summer evening filled with the melodies of a jazz band. Every summer, the Friends put on ‘Jazz on the Broadwalk’ events. In fact, we’re actually really close to one of those performances right now. If you listen closely enough, you might just hear the faint strains of a sax. It’s a good reminder that music is resilient, like this bandstand, it continues to carry on, a beacon of hope and joy, even in the face of hardship.
