Once a local farm, now a vibrant suburb. That’s Glendene. We are standing here in Glendene. It is a suburb in West Auckland. Glendene operates under the Auckland Council.

Glendene’s story starts with Percy Jones. His farm gave the suburb its name. Later, the farm was divided into housing lots. This transformation shaped the Glendene we see today.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Whau River’s shores buzzed with activity. Clay and pottery yards dotted the landscape. Malam, Laurie, Black & Scott, and Hepburn were among the prominent names. These yards contributed significantly to the region’s industrial heritage.

Glendene’s residential development took off in the 1960s and 1970s. Families flocked to this area. They sought a peaceful community close to Auckland.

In April 2014, Glendene joined the Kelston electorate. This change marked a shift in local governance. It also reflected the evolving political landscape.

Responding to community needs, the Glendene Community Hub opened in March 2015. Council studies highlighted the need for community development. The Hub became a focal point. It offered resources and activities for residents.

Glendene covers 2.51 square kilometers. As of June 2024, it has an estimated population of 8,350. The population density is 3,327 people per square kilometer.

The 2023 New Zealand census recorded 7,719 residents. This was an increase of 156 people since 2018. There were 3,900 males and 3,789 females. Thirty people identified with other genders. The median age was 35.5 years. This is slightly lower than the national median of 38.1 years.

Glendene is diverse. About 37.9% identify as European. 15.0% are Māori. 28.2% are Pasifika. 33.1% are Asian. A smaller percentage identify as Middle Eastern, Latin American, or African.

English is widely spoken. Approximately 92.7% of residents use it. Māori language is spoken by 3.6%. Samoan is spoken by 8.6%. A significant 30.2% speak other languages.

Glendene School is the local primary school. It opened in 1965. The school is coeducational. As of November 2024, it has 138 students.
