Here stands Chester House. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed this house and lived here. He resided here from 1926 to 1960.

This blue plaque commemorates Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. He was an influential British architect. English Heritage erected this plaque in 1990. It marks his residence at Chester House.

Scott was born in 1880. He died in 1960. His architectural legacy includes several iconic structures. These include the New Bodleian Library and Battersea Power Station. He also designed the red telephone box.

Chester House is located on Clarendon Place in Paddington. Scott designed it as his personal residence. The house reflects a restrained Renaissance design. It received an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1928. This was for London street architecture.

Scott came from a family of architects. His father and grandfather were also architects. He blended Gothic tradition with modernism. This made his buildings popular landmarks.

The Historic England listing notes the building’s design. It calls it a restrained and carefully proportioned stripped Renaissance design. Bridget Cherry described it as one of the few fine individual buildings. These buildings were built in North West London in the 1920s and 1930s.

Scott’s early life influenced his architectural style. His father was declared to be of unsound mind. Scott saw little of him. He regularly went on cycling trips with his mother. They sketched buildings in the area. This encouraged his interest in architecture.

Scott’s most famous work is Liverpool Cathedral. He won the competition to design it in 1903. He was only 22 years old. His design was controversial because he was Roman Catholic.

Besides Liverpool Cathedral, Scott designed many other buildings. These include churches and secular structures. His design for the red telephone box is perhaps his most ubiquitous work.

Battersea Power Station is another notable design. Scott enhanced the external appearance of the building. He remodeled the four corner chimneys to resemble classical columns.

The New Bodleian Library in Oxford is another significant project. Scott provided storage for millions of books. He built deep into the earth. This kept the building low.

Scott’s search for a middle line caused him difficulties with Coventry Cathedral. He resigned in 1947. He was unable to reconcile differing opinions.

After war damage, Scott rebuilt the Commons chamber. He felt the new chamber should match the old Gothic style.

In his later years, Scott continued to design religious buildings. He worked until his death at age 79. Scott was buried outside Liverpool Cathedral. He did not want it to become a mausoleum.

The Giles Gilbert Scott Blue Plaque marks the home of a great architect. It reminds us of his lasting impact on British architecture. Take a moment to appreciate this building. Remember the man who lived and worked here. His designs shaped the landscape of London and beyond.
