Kea’iwa Heiau in Aiea Heights Oahu holds a special place in Hawaiian history. Built sometime in the 16th century it served as a center for medicinal healing. Its 100-foot by 160-foot stone walls once enclosed a sacred area. A large thatched structure a halau housed medicinal implements. Kahuna trained students haumana in la’au lapa’au the art of healing. They taught the use of plants prayers and fasting to treat illnesses.

But Kea’iwa Heiau isn’t just about ancient practices. The name itself is intriguing. Meaning “mysterious” or “incomprehensible” it hints at the powerful yet unexplained healing abilities attributed to the kahuna and the plants. Some believe the name references the healing powers of plants that were difficult to understand. The abundant medicinal herbs were collected from the surrounding forest. Some were even planted near the heiau.

Today you can still feel a sense of mystery here. Visitors leave offerings hoping for healing benefits. The area itself is beautiful. Lemon eucalyptus trees planted in the 1920s fill the air with a pleasant citrus scent. Native koa and ohia trees thrive at the trail’s high point Pu’u Uau. Even the wreckage of a 1944 B-24 bomber adds a layer to this place. It is believed that the heiau was built by Kakuhihewa a powerful Ali’i or chief of Oahu. He and his kahuna Kea’iwa oversaw its construction.

The Kea’iwa Heiau State Recreation Area offers a 4.8-mile trail. This offers stunning views of Pearl Harbor. It’s a peaceful place where the past and present intertwine.
