Picture the sleek steel and glass structures. Imagine the vibrant energy of Illinois Tech. This isn’t just a university. It’s a living testament to innovation. Illinois Tech’s story begins in 1890. A Chicago minister Frank Wakely Gunsaulus envisioned a school. A school where learning was practical. A school where students learned by doing. Philip Danforth Armour Sr a wealthy meatpacker believed in the vision. He donated a million dollars. The Armour Institute opened its doors in 1893. It offered courses in engineering chemistry architecture and library science.

But Illinois Tech is more than one school. In 1940 the Armour Institute merged with the Lewis Institute. Lewis Institute established in 1895 offered liberal arts and science. The merger created the Illinois Institute of Technology. The university’s growth didn’t stop there. The Institute of Design merged in 1949. Chicago-Kent College of Law joined in 1969. The Midwest College of Engineering became part of Illinois Tech in 1986.

The campus itself is a masterpiece. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe a renowned architect designed much of it. His modernist designs transformed the campus. His buildings stand as icons of 20th-century architecture. The campus wasn’t just buildings. Landscape architect Alfred Caldwell worked alongside Mies. He designed the campus’s landscaping. His work complements Mies’s architecture. The campus is a harmonious blend of architecture and nature.

Illinois Tech experienced remarkable growth under President John T Rettaliata. From 1952 to 1973 it expanded rapidly. At one point it was the largest engineering school in the United States. The university housed many research organizations. This period solidified Illinois Tech’s reputation for excellence. The campus’s location in Bronzeville is significant. Bronzeville has a rich African-American history. It played a vital role in the Great Migration. The university’s presence in this historic neighborhood adds another layer to its identity.

Today Illinois Tech remains a leading research university. Its contributions to engineering science architecture and design are widely recognized. The university continues to evolve. New buildings like the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship stand as proof. This cutting-edge facility shows Illinois Tech’s ongoing commitment to innovation. Illinois Tech is more than just a collection of buildings and programs. It’s a community. It’s a legacy. It’s a powerful force for progress. It’s a place where the past inspires the future. A place where innovation thrives. This is Illinois Institute of Technology.
