Struggling to imagine this temple? The narrow path to Ujoji Temple number 30, also known as Tsurugami Temple, is barely wide enough for a car.

Welcome to Tsurugami Temple in Hiroshima. This temple is part of the Hiroshima New 4 country 88 place sacred ground. Its story is quite unique.

Let’s step back in time to between 901 and 922. The noble Senouchi family lived here then. They requested the main statue of the deity Daimyojin. This marked the beginning of our temple.

Fast forward to 1882. The government was consolidating shrines and temples. Tsurugami Temple almost disappeared. But Senouchi family descendants, along with the head priest of Chofukuji Temple and the mayor of Fuchu Village, intervened. They successfully prevented its closure.

Today, Tsurugami Temple stands as a testament to its resilience. It’s a reminder of the community’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage. The temple grounds may be small. But they exude a sense of history and tranquility.

As you look around you will notice how compact everything is. The main hall feels like you are visiting someone’s home. This temple is not grand or imposing. Yet its humble charm is what makes it special.

After paying your respects, be sure to get the giant vermilion stamp. It is a memento of your visit. Also, it marks your participation in the Hiroshima New 4 country pilgrimage.
