“A life of tireless struggle” a weathered poster proclaimed. We stand before Rue Léon Mauvais in Vitry-sur-Seine. This unassuming street holds the legacy of a remarkable man. Léon Mauvais a name synonymous with unwavering commitment to the working class.

Léon Mauvais was not born into privilege. He was the son of a coachman and a cook. At thirteen he became an apprentice machinist. This was in Ivry-sur-Seine. Two years later in 1917 he joined the CGT. He became deeply influenced by anarcho-syndicalism. He later worked at an electricity plant in Vitry-sur-Seine. His dedication led to leadership roles. By 1924 he was the general delegate of his union branch.

In 1925 he participated in the general strike. This was called by the French Communist Party. It was against the colonial war in Morocco. This is when Léon Mauvais joined the party. His life became a double-pronged battle. He fought politically and within the unions. In 1927 he was elected permanent secretary of the Parisian electricity workers’ union.

Following the 1920 union split he became a leader in the CGTU. He was also part of the Red International of Labour Unions. This led him to Greece and Romania. While in Romania he was briefly arrested. He returned to France in 1931. Then he became secretary of the CGT-U. He led several major strikes. This included strikes in the Aube region Le Havre the Nord and Dunkirk.

In 1935 he was elected municipal councilor of Paris’s 14th arrondissement. He also served as secretary of the communist group at Paris’s city hall. At the start of the war communist officials were expelled from the city hall. Mauvais joined his military unit. Demobilized in 1940 he was immediately arrested. Imprisoned in several camps he eventually escaped.

The central committee appointed him as a political leader in the south zone. He organized strikes and protests. These were meant to start a mass movement against the occupiers. After the liberation he was awarded the Legion of Honour. He remained a significant figure in Parisian politics. He became a municipal councilor and a general councilor of the Seine.

In 1946 he was elected to the Council of the Republic. He joined the communist group and served on the industrial production commission. His time in the Council was short. It ended with the 1948 elections. He later devoted himself to reorganizing the communist party. He played a key role in the purge of André Marty and Charles Tillon. He continued his work in the union. In 1951 he became a leader of the lighting federation. Two years later he became its confederal secretary. He was known for powerful speeches.

Léon Mauvais’s life was a testament to unwavering dedication. This street remembers a man who fiercely championed the working class. His legacy is one of tireless effort and enduring belief. A life dedicated to the struggle. A life worth remembering. His memory lives on in this quiet Vitry-sur-Seine street.
