The whispering willows along Deep Creek seemed to hold secrets. Secrets of Darraweit Guim a small Victorian village nestled in the Macedon Ranges. This isn’t just any town. This is a place where history whispers through the bluestone of its buildings. A place where the echoes of pioneers still linger.

Darraweit Guim sits at the meeting point of Deep and Boyds Creeks. Some believe its name means ‘where three creeks meet’ in an Aboriginal language. Others say ‘Darraweit’ signifies a meeting place while ‘Guim’ describes the water’s turn. No one is truly certain. This mystery adds to its charm.

Imagine the early 1860s. Mr and Mrs Francis ran a general store near the Toll Bar Corner. This wasn’t just any store. It was a hub of activity. A place where tolls were collected for the upkeep of the roads. Butter from Deep Creek farms was traded here. Potatoes destined for the Bendigo goldfields were loaded onto bullock or horse-drawn wagons. The goldfields weren’t just a place for riches. They were a market.

The year 1866 marked a significant turning point. Township lots became available for selection. A Wesleyan school opened its doors educating children. The area was fertile. It supported crops dairying and grazing. In 1890 a creamery added to the local economy. Life wasn’t always easy. Floods ravaged the town in 1906 1916 1934 1964 and 1990. In 1969 a devastating fire destroyed twelve homes. It also claimed both churches and the town hall. They were later rebuilt showcasing the resilience of the community. Even the October 2022 floods caused significant damage. They washed out the main road and destroyed as many as fifteen homes. This included the historic primary school. These events are a stark reminder that nature’s power can shape a town’s story.

The Darraweit Guim Post Office opened in 1868 closing in 1976. It moved from home to home before Wallan took over its postal duties. A general store stood near the ford a crossing point for the old coach road. This store opened in 1866 perhaps even earlier. The Guy family reopened it in the 1990s but it’s now sadly dilapidated.

Today Darraweit Guim is a quiet place. Yet it pulsates with the energy of its past. Its buildings its creeks its history. These are the threads that weave the rich tapestry of this small yet significant town. Its story is a tribute to resilience community and the enduring spirit of pioneers. Remember Darraweit Guim when you think of the places that shape Victoria.
