Recall if you will the year 1897. The Grand Army of the Republic rooms in the Chicago Cultural Center were completed. This was a tribute to Civil War veterans and their families. It was designed by Shepley Rutan and Coolidge of Boston. The rooms aimed to honor the veterans’ well-being. This included their social political and moral state. In 2022 the rooms underwent a historic restoration. This restoration highlighted the rooms’ original purpose.

Consider how we are still fighting for freedom today. The Grand Army of the Republic Rotunda features a stunning dome. This art glass dome is 40 feet in diameter. It comprises 62000 pieces. Interestingly this dome is larger than the one in Preston Bradley Hall.
In the 1940s the dome was covered with cement and copper. This was done to stop water damage and electric lights were installed. The stained glass has now been fully restored. It is lit with natural light and protected by a clear cover. The glass underwent a monumental cleaning and repair. The restoration team found the original Tiffany finishes intact. They were hidden beneath layers of grime.
The original paint colors were revealed chip by chip. Plaster detailing was repaired. Moldings were recreated. Embossed plaster carvings on the ceiling were renovated. In the Grand Army of the Republic Hall you’ll see major Civil War battles. They are listed chronologically in gold around the room. The green marble is from Vermont. The cherry wood cases once displayed Civil War artifacts. These artifacts are now at the Harold Washington Library Center.
During the restoration the ceiling and walls were treated with care. Paint was removed and damage was repaired. The carpets were recreated by computer. They match the patterns and colors of the original floors. These carpets will now help control sound. Cutting-edge technologies recreated missing elements from 1897. Old photos and drawings helped recreate missing chandeliers. Computer imaging and 3D printing were used. The chandeliers were recast in bronze. They feature replica hand-blown glass shades. The windows have been restored to clear glass. This allows light into the room and provides a view from the street. The Grand Army of the Republic rooms serve as a reminder of the Civil War and its impact. They remind us of the sacrifices made for freedom. This space encourages reflection on the past and present struggles for freedom.
