In 1997, Somerville Intermediate School first opened its doors. It was built on land once owned by the Somerville family, for whom the school is named. This land holds a deeper history though. Somerville Intermediate School sits in what was once the Mangemangeroa Valley. The Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi originally called this valley home. They lived in several pā, fortified villages, using the resources of the forest and sea for their sustenance. Traces of their lives, like midden sites, kumara pits, and stepping stones, still whisper of their presence in at least five different locations within the valley. Imagine their bustling communities thriving in this very spot, long before Archibald Somerville acquired the vast Paparoa Farm in 1863. Archibald Somerville lived until 1892. After his death, portions of his land were designated for a future school. Fast forward to the late 20th century. A housing boom in the area created the need for a new intermediate school. Construction began, and in 1997, Somerville Intermediate School emerged. Today, Somerville Intermediate offers a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities for its students. The school prides itself on its “ASPIRE” values: Attitude, Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect, and Excellence. These values are the bedrock of the school’s holistic education, designed to foster not just academic achievement, but also positive character traits, collaboration, critical thinking, and a sense of global citizenship. Somerville Intermediate School aims to prepare students for success, both in their academic pursuits and in life beyond the classroom. The school offers a robust academic program, including international examinations and a gifted student program. Students can also participate in a leadership program and benefit from digital technology integration. Specialized ESOL programs provide English language support for international students. The school even has partnerships with several local secondary schools: Botany Downs Secondary College, Howick College, Macleans College, and St Kentigern’s. Beyond academics, Somerville Intermediate vibrates with cultural and sporting activities. From art, music, dance, and drama to international exchange programs and competitive sports teams, there’s something for everyone. The extensive school grounds, gymnasium, and astroturf provide ample space for physical activity and outdoor education. Somerville Intermediate School is more than just bricks and mortar. It stands as a testament to the layers of history embedded in this land, from the indigenous communities who first called it home to the vision of Archibald Somerville and the vibrant community it serves today. Somerville Intermediate strives to nurture well-rounded individuals. They help students become the best they can be.
