Picture Amaliehaven a tranquil oasis in the heart of Copenhagen. This charming park nestled between Amalienborg Palace and the waterfront wasn’t always a haven of peace. Before its creation in 1983 Amaliehaven held a different identity.

For many years this very spot was home to Larsen’s Plads a bustling shipyard. Lars Larsen a wealthy ship-owner established the shipyard in 1802. Its large lumberyard sat beside Amalienborg Palace. The area became known as Larsen’s Plads in 1821 after its founder. The shipyard thrived for decades. It facilitated the ambitions of Scandinavian emigrants.

The Thingvalla Line established a port terminal here in 1879. They offered affordable passage to America. In 1898 DFDS acquired the Thingvalla Line. The Scandinavian-American passenger service continued under the new name Scandinavian America Line. This route helped countless Scandinavians seek new lives across the ocean. The transatlantic voyages ended in 1935. Oslo Ferries briefly used the quay area. They eventually moved to the Free Port Terminal further north.

The transformation of Larsen’s Plads into Amaliehaven began in 1981. A generous donation from the A P Møller and Chastine McKinney Møller Foundation made the project possible. Belgian landscape architect Jean Delogne designed the park. He created a symmetrical rectangular space. A large fountain forms the heart of Amaliehaven. This respects and enhances the Frederiksgade axis. The axis unifies the entire Frederiksstaden neighborhood.

Amaliehaven extends on two levels. Shrubs and walls enclose it. It’s a beautiful contrast to the waterfront and city street. The park’s vegetation showcases varied plant life and fragrant blooms. Their colors and shapes stand out against the geometric design. Japanese cherry trees add a special touch. Their blossoms in April paint the park in vibrant pink.

Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro contributed significantly to Amaliehaven’s beauty. He crafted the central fountain. He also created four large abstract columns and two sun-like water features. These sprinkle the garden with their jets of water.

Amaliehaven’s history mirrors Copenhagen’s evolution from a bustling port to a modern city. It’s a gift to the city a serene spot where history and modern design meet. It’s a testament to the visionary planning that shaped this area and to the enduring generosity of the Møller Foundation.
