Behold the Richard Oglesby Monument. This ten-foot-tall bronze figure stands proudly. It overlooks Lincoln Park from its perch atop Mount Prospect.

This isn’t just any statue. It’s a tribute to Richard J Oglesby. He was a Civil War hero and Illinois’ fourteenth governor. Born in Kentucky Oglesby moved to Decatur Illinois. He later served in the Union Army. President Abraham Lincoln promoted him to Major General. Oglesby served three terms as governor. He was also a United States senator.

The monument itself has a fascinating story. Five prominent Chicagoans commissioned it thirty years after Oglesby’s death. They hired Leonard Crunelle a French immigrant and sculptor. Crunelle who had previously worked as a coal miner was mentored by Lorado Taft. He created several other important Chicago artworks.

Crunelle’s portrayal of Governor Oglesby is humanistic. Oglesby is shown holding his hat. His coat is draped over his arm. The statue sits atop a granite base. This base and the bronze figure were carefully conserved in 1993 by the Chicago Park District.

The Richard Oglesby Monument is more than just a statue. It’s a testament to a remarkable life. It’s a piece of Chicago’s history. It stands as a reminder of a man who served his country and his state with distinction. The next time you’re in Lincoln Park remember to reflect on the life of Richard J Oglesby. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry of Leonard Crunelle. Consider the dedication of the five Chicagoans who made this monument a reality.
