Circling Mexico City, the Periférico isn’t just another highway. It’s a concrete river, flowing with stories. The Periférico, known locally as “el periférico,” meaning “peripheral ring,” encircles Mexico City. Its history stretches back to 1925, when architect Carlos Contreras envisioned it alongside other major roadways like the Viaducto Miguel Alemán. Imagine Contreras sketching out his plans, a vision of a modern, interconnected city taking shape. The Periférico wasn’t just built on land. Parts of it actually trace the paths of former rivers, their waters diverted into pipes beneath the roadway. The Periférico evolved over time. In the early 2000s, then-mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador spearheaded a project to create a double-decker highway along a southern portion. This ambitious undertaking saw the second level completed in 2006 within the Federal District and extended into the State of Mexico by 2009. Different sections of this second level have different names. From Cuautitlán to Naucalpan, it’s the Viaducto Elevado Bicentenario, the “Bicentennial Elevated Viaduct.” From the old bullring, Toreo, to San Jerónimo, it becomes the Autopista Urbana Norte, the “Northern Urban Tollway.” And from San Jerónimo southward to the Calzada de Tlalpan, it’s known as the Autopista Urbana Sur, the “Southern Urban Tollway.” So, as you stand near the Periférico, consider the layers of history beneath your feet, the diverted rivers, and the vision of a city constantly reinventing itself.
