Ever wondered what it means for a church to have the face of a lion? Here we are, standing before the Igreja Cara de Leão. It is more than just a name. It is a mission.

Igreja Cara de Leão emerged from the vision of the Projeto Vida Nova. This name was strategically chosen. It avoids overt religious connotations.

Let us step back to the late 1980s. Pastors Ezequiel Teixeira and Isael Teixeira started holding evangelistic services. These took place at the Brazilian Press Association. It is also known as ABI in downtown Rio de Janeiro. These services united believers from various denominations. They shared a common goal. They aimed to spread the Gospel. It was not exactly a church yet. It did not have a formal membership.

Parallel to these services, they ran a radio program. They also visited prisons, favelas, and institutions for underprivileged children. The work bore fruit. Many converts sought churches. They looked for places that echoed the ABI services’ spirit. Thus, the Associação Missionária Vida Nova was founded on March 5, 1989. It had a dynamic vision.

Ezequiel Teixeira distributed flyers in Irajá with his wife Márcia Teixeira. They invited people to services. These were held on the terrace of Maestro Zênio Alencar’s house. Alencar led the Renascer choir. He was also Ezequiel’s father-in-law.

The services grew. Miracles happened. The need for a dedicated temple arose. An opportunity emerged on Avenida Monsenhor Félix. A large warehouse became available. It once housed the most famous pagode in the neighborhood. This space was acquired in October 1989. It was inaugurated in November of the same year. It became the headquarters of Projeto Vida Nova.

But why a lion’s face? At a youth camp, the Holy Spirit revealed the church’s character. It would be bold and fierce. It was called to act with prophetic authority. From then on, “Cara de Leão” became the registered trademark.

The music ministry became a core part. It revolutionized worship. It helped spread the church nationwide. The Igreja Cara de Leão believes in strategic evangelism. They preach the gospel at every opportunity. They distribute sweets to children. This attracts families to church. They also visit cemeteries on the Day of the Dead. They neutralize witchcraft. They also evangelize and pray for those seeking comfort.

The Igreja Cara de Leão is known for its “Bloco Cara de Leão” during Carnival. Members sing evangelical hymns. They distribute leaflets. Pastors offer prayers from sound trucks. This happens amidst the revelry of secular revelers.

Today, Projeto Vida Nova has numerous churches. They are spread across Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and other countries. It has a seminary for training leaders. It also has a music ministry school.

For some, it is innovative. For others, it is an army of fearless warriors. The church’s president, Ezequiel Teixeira, says God’s will is the best place in the world. It is for those who obey the Father.

The Igreja Cara de Leão stands as a testament. It testifies to faith and boldness. It is a beacon. It calls people to a life of purpose. Remember this story of a church with a lion’s face. Its roar echoes through Brazil and beyond.
