Consider this: a grand vizier’s ambition shaped the skyline of Istanbul in the late 15th century. That ambition materialized as the Gazi Atik Ali Pasha Mosque. It stands near the Grand Bazaar’s entrance. It is close to the Column of Constantine. The Nuruosmaniye Mosque is nearby too.

This mosque’s story began in 1496. Hadım Atik Ali Pasha, a future Grand Vizier, ordered its construction. It finished in 1497 during Sultan Bayezid II’s reign. The Gazi Atik Ali Pasha Mosque is completely built by cut stone.

Earthquakes tested the mosque’s resilience. One in 1648 caused the dome to collapse. The minaret was partially damaged too. Further earthquakes in 1716 and 1766 caused more damage. The mosque has been revived several times.

The Gazi Atik Ali Pasha Mosque has a unique feature. Its original design lacked ablution fountains. This sets it apart from other Ottoman mosques. The ablution area and toilet cubicles were added later.

The mosque occupies a space of 21.55 by 28.13 square meters. The roof features a main dome measuring 13.30 meters in diameter. A semi-dome and four accessory domes support the roof. The single minaret has one balcony. The 1648 earthquake heavily damaged the minaret. It lost its original form.

Sami Effendi’s calligraphy decorates the entrance. He was a famous calligraphist. It reads a verse from the Quran. This verse emphasizes prayer’s importance for believers.

Atik Ali Pasha Cami comprises a rectangular domed prayer hall. A five-bay portico precedes it. Small domes surmount all portico bays. The entrance portal is under the central bay. A minaret rises from the portico’s west corner.

The entrance leads to the prayer hall. It features a large domed central bay. Lower aisles flank it on two sides. Each aisle has two domed bays. A wide bay covered by a half dome extends the southern side. A large mihrab is built into this bay’s back.

Windows at clerestory and ground levels bring light into the prayer hall. Muqarnas squinches transition between base and half-dome. This transition is visible in the southern bay above the mihrab.

The Gazi Atik Ali Pasha Mosque stands as a testament to time. It showcases Ottoman architecture. It shows resilience in the face of natural disasters. It is a place of worship and a historical landmark. Its story connects ambition, faith, and the enduring spirit of Istanbul.
