Lost in the Dandenong Ranges, have you ever stumbled upon a place where the air itself feels different? That place is Kallista. Kallista, a locality within Greater Melbourne, is celebrated for its picturesque natural setting. It has a wealth of heritage and luxury houses. Its gardens and country atmosphere are all within commuting distance to inner Melbourne.

Kallista’s story began long before European settlers arrived. The Woiwurrung Aboriginal people called this area home. The Wurrundjeri people also passed their winters near the Dandenong Ranges. In 1839, botanist Daniel Bunce became the first European to explore the Dandenongs. He climbed Mt Corhanwarrabul and Mt Dandenong.

Originally, the European settlement was known as South Sassafras. But in 1925, the name changed to Kallista. Kallista is Greek for most beautiful. The area’s history evolved from logging and farming to residential housing. Today, Kallista is part of greater metropolitan Melbourne.

In the 1850s, loggers began to exploit the local forests. By 1867, the government surveyed the area. They declared 26500 acres a forest reserve. During the 1890s depression, more land opened for selection. Kallista became a haven for village and free selectors.

The Kallista Post Office opened around 1902. It was known as South Sassafras until 1925. Roads improved, and Melburnians built weekend homes here. In 1919, the South Sassafras State School opened. A telephone exchange followed in 1923.

The Great Depression brought new residents. People sought to sustain their families from small land holdings. Today, Kallista retains its charm with tea houses and craft shops. Dandenong Ranges National Park lies on its edge. High rainfall and volcanic soils create lush forests.

Kallista offers multiple attractions for tourists. Grants Picnic Ground is famous for its bird feeding. Spectacular cockatoos, rosellas, and parrots fly in to say hello. Walking tracks wind through native plants and wildlife.

The Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden is another gem. Waterfalls, an ornamental lake, and mountain ash trees create a serene setting. Burnham Beeches, an Art Moderne mansion, has served as a research facility. It was once a luxury hotel and a children’s hospital. Celebrity chef Shannon Bennett later purchased it.

Tom Roberts, the artist, lived and painted in Kallista in the early 1920s. His paintings capture the essence of the area. C.J. Dennis, the poet, also found inspiration here. He wrote much of The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke while camping in Kallista.

Today, when you wander through Kallista, remember its layers of history. From its indigenous roots to its artistic connections, Kallista invites you to experience its beauty. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh country air. Appreciate the unique blend of nature and culture that defines this most beautiful place.
