Did you know the Honolulu Central Seventh-day Adventist Church has a history brimming with faith and resilience? Right here before us stands a testament to a community’s unwavering dedication. Established in 1888 from a humble beginning of nine members it is a story of growth and unwavering faith. This wasn’t just any church founding. Pastor A J Cudney organized those first nine believers. Tragically he perished at sea just days after the church’s formation. The church’s early years were marked by the passionate preaching of William Healey. He converted nine people in a fifty-foot tent. This highlighted the importance of public evangelism a cornerstone of Central Church’s identity. The church moved several times as its congregation grew. The first church a small building on Kinau Street. Later it moved to Keeaumoku Street twice building larger churches to accommodate its expanding membership. Imagine the community spirit as members built these structures themselves. During this time the church boldly embraced new technologies. On October 12 1941 they launched their first radio broadcasts a pioneering effort to reach a wider audience. The Second World War brought unique challenges and opportunities. The church became a haven for servicemen. As many as 100 attended Sabbath services. Members provided hospitality opening their homes and even using an old academy building. The name Desmond Doss a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient appears in the church guest book a symbol of the church’s compassion and inclusiveness. The church’s growth led to the construction of a larger building on Piikoi Street in 1949. Even then its expansion continued as the church planted several new congregations. Members shared their faith and resources. They helped establish churches in Kaimuki Wahiawa and Manoa Valley. The need for more space ultimately led to the construction of the current magnificent building. Located in Nuuanu Valley next to the Mauna Ala it’s a stunning structure. The building project was truly remarkable. Eighty thousand hours of volunteer labor were contributed by the congregation. Central Church became known as “the Miracle Church” a testament to the community’s unity and dedication. Today the Honolulu Central Seventh-day Adventist Church stands as a proud symbol of faith perseverance and community. Its legacy continues to inspire and bless many generations.
