Look closely at these bronze giants. Standing proud on the green lawn in front of Marble Arch, they are known as The Orphans. These 21 life-size bronze elephants, created by acclaimed artists Gillie and Marc, are a poignant reminder of the plight of orphaned elephants in Africa. Each of the 20 baby elephants represents a real orphan currently in the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. They are a reminder of the devastating effects of human actions, such as poaching.

These baby elephants are modeled after real orphaned baby elephants currently in the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Each sculpture includes the name of the orphaned calf they represent and their sad backstory. You can even find out more about them by scanning a QR code near their feet. What makes The Orphans even more special is that the mother elephant is 3 meters tall. Her tusks are painted blue, serving as a powerful symbol for the dangers that elephants face.

The Orphans arrived in London in December 2019 and stayed for one year. The installation was a huge success, raising awareness about the plight of elephants and funds for the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of East Africa’s oldest and most pioneering conservation charities. They work tirelessly to protect elephants and ensure their survival. Although The Orphans are no longer there, their presence is still felt. Their story reminds us of the importance of protecting our planet and its inhabitants, especially those like elephants who are so vulnerable to human greed.
