Gazing across the serene waters of Farum Sø, can you sense the echoes of history? Farum Sø, nestled northwest of Copenhagen in the Mølleå valley, whispers tales of royalty, jesters, and hidden treasures. This lake, the third largest in the Mølleå river system after Furesø and Bagsværd Sø, holds a special place in Danish lore. Farum Sø isn’t just a beautiful body of water. It’s a protected area, both an EU bird protection and habitat area. Motor vessels are forbidden, preserving the tranquility and allowing birdlife to flourish. Common goldeneye ducks, tufted ducks, and common mergansers are frequent visitors. During the summer, you might catch a glimpse of marsh harriers soaring above. In spring and autumn, ospreys grace the lake with their presence. Farum Sø cradles two small islands: Svaneholm and Klavs Nars Holm. Klavs Nars Holm is privately owned and inhabited, adding a touch of mystery to the landscape. Legend has it that the island’s namesake, Klavs Nar, was a court jester to King Valdemar Atterdag. The story goes that the king, perhaps in a moment of jest himself, gifted the island to Klavs Nar. He tasked him with building a house there. Dissatisfied with his reward, Klavs Nar plotted a humorous revenge. He invited the king to dine on eel soup on the island. When it came time to serve the meal, the jester pointed to the lake and declared, “There is your soup, and the eels are in it!” The king, amused but unimpressed, replied, “That was a meager meal.” Klavs Nar, quick-witted as ever, retorted, “As the island, so the dinner.” Another tale whispers of a lost treasure. King Frederik VII, known to frequent Farumgård with Countess Danner and General Major J.H. Fensmark, supposedly lost a valuable silver service in the lake during an afternoon tea party on the island. Whether truth or legend, these stories add a rich layer of intrigue to Farum Sø’s tranquil beauty. Farum Sø remains a timeless sanctuary, a place where nature thrives and stories linger in the gentle breeze.
