It was envisioned as the first piece of a grand, three-building complex. Sadly, only this solitary diamond materialized due to leasehold complications. Imagine, in 1978, a crane plummeting 27 stories during construction, tragically taking a life and scarring the tower’s side. Yet, One Dallas Center persevered, opening its doors to the world a year later. The building’s unique diamond shape isn’t just a stylistic flourish. It’s a deliberate echo of Dallas’s intersecting street grid, specifically where Live Oak Street meets the downtown grid at a jaunty 30-degree angle. Two triangular notches carved into its sides add an extra layer of visual interest. They also cleverly create four more corner offices per floor. A bold choice, wouldn’t you say? The exterior is a study in contrasts, two-thirds aluminum and one-third glass. This design wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was a nod to energy conservation and a way to complement the neighboring Republic Center’s style. One Dallas Center has changed hands over the years. From Trammell Crow in the 1980s to Younan Properties in 2007, each owner left their mark. Younan even briefly renamed it Patriot Tower and envisioned a war memorial museum in the lobby. Today, One Dallas Center thrives under the stewardship of Todd Interests. The first 15 floors hum with the energy of office life, housing the headquarters of renowned firms like HKS Inc. and Greyhound. Above, the top 15 floors offer a luxurious residential escape, a testament to the building’s adaptability. One Dallas Center is more than steel and glass; it’s a symbol of Dallas’s dynamism.
